Many islands and a few famous beaches

The Whitsundays are 74 tropical islands off Queensland's central coast, in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef.1 Most are uninhabited national park, while a handful host resorts, and five islands welcome overnight guests, from full-service resorts to barefoot camping.2,10 That split decides how you meet the sand. Some beaches are stops on a boat day, some belong to a resort and some are on the mainland, a short walk from a town.

The islands without overnight stays can be explored by day on sailing tours, ferry transfers or scenic flights departing Airlie Beach.11 Most visitors reach Whitehaven Beach on a guided tour that leaves from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island or Hayman Island.12 The Whitsunday Islands beach list below is therefore sorted by how you arrive as much as by how the sand looks, because the boat decides which beaches are possible on a given day.

The sand differs from one beach to the next, from the white silica of the best-known beach to the golden sand of resort bays, and the water shifts between the green of shallow bays and the blue of deeper channels. Each beach below is described only as far as official sources describe it, and the table further down puts them side by side.

Whitehaven Beach, the one the others are measured against

Whitehaven Beach stretches 7 km along the eastern side of Whitsunday Island, and its sand is 98% pure silica that stays cool underfoot.3,4 Tourism Whitsundays says the beach is renowned for pure silica sand and clear, shallow water, and is a popular family day trip with calm, clear water and soft sand.16,17 Hamilton Island describes it as washed by swirls of turquoise, blue and green water.18

For anyone searching for Whitsunday Islands Whitehaven Beach tours, the useful fact is how it is reached. There is no scheduled public ferry direct to the beach, and visitors arrive by tour boat, fast vessel, yacht or scenic flight.19,20 From Hamilton Island it is a 30-minute trip on a high-speed catamaran.21 The beach is undeveloped within the national park, with composting toilets and picnic tables near the camping area and no shops or cafes.22,23

The beach has two ends and each has its own lookout. Hill Inlet at the north end is best viewed from a lookout, and the South-Whitehaven Beach Lookout looks across to Teague Island and Haslewood Island.5,24 Tours can land on either end or on both, and the fullest experience comes from tours that include the lookout and time on North or South Whitehaven.25

Distances on foot

Track and beach lengths in kilometers

  • Lookout return walk1.4

  • Long Island trails17

The lookout walk is 1.4 km return, the Chance Bay track is 3.5 km, Whitehaven Beach stretches 7 km and Long Island has 17 km of national park trails.14,26,3,27

Hill Inlet, Betty's Beach and Chalkies on the same trip

For Whitehaven Whitsundays visitors, the beach has a neighbour worth knowing. Hill Inlet lies at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach, where tides mix inlet waters with the surrounding bay, and its swirling patterns are best viewed from the lookout above.5 Tours for the lookout land at Tongue Bay on the northern end of Whitsunday Island, and, by Tourism Whitsundays' beach page, the walk climbs Tongue Point on a 1.4 km return track.13,14 It is a viewpoint more than a swimming beach, and the picture is made from above. The pattern shifts with the tide and the weather, so each visit brings its own formations and colours.32

Other beaches appear in tour descriptions. One sailing day visits Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and Betty's Beach, and one full-day cruise pairs Whitehaven Beach for relaxing with Chalkies Beach for snorkelling.6,7 A day with two beaches in it gives you a choice: spend the longer part on the sand, or add a snorkel stop. The names help you read an itinerary, because they show whether a day is about sand or about water.

This site's rafting day names snorkel sites at Hook Island and Border Island in its itinerary, with a buffet style lunch served at the beach. The Southern Lights option spends approximately two hours at South Whitehaven, while the Northern Exposure option spends an hour at North Whitehaven. The listing is from $174 for 7 hours and up to 32 guests, with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance.

Resort beaches: Catseye, Daydream and Long Island

Hamilton Island has beaches that belong to the resort. The Whitsunday Apartments overlook the golden sands of Catseye Beach, and an easy island walk runs from Catseye Beach across gentle headlands to Escape Beach, a quiet cove for a swim and a picnic.8,28 Hamilton Island offers the widest choice of dining, activities and tours, and visitors can hire a buggy to get around and join tours to the reef and Whitehaven Beach.31,38

Daydream Island is compact and family-friendly, and the Living Reef there is a 200-metre free-form coral lagoon with more than 100 species of local marine life and an Underwater Observatory.31,39 Long Island is peaceful and close to nature, with 17 km of national park trails connecting secluded beaches, coastal lookouts and sheltered bays.31,27 Both Long Island resorts are adults-only.40

Hayman Island is the northernmost island resort in the Whitsundays, and a short but steep walk there descends through rainforest and rocky sections to Blue Pearl Bay.41,42 Resort beaches suit visitors who want to stay put. They give easy access to sand, pools and dining, and they pair well with one day trip to Whitehaven rather than a different beach every day. Overnight stays can be simpler still: national park islands offer designated camping areas, and camping permits are required.43

Mainland beaches around Airlie Beach and Bowen

The mainland has its own sand. The Airlie Beach Lagoon provides freshwater swimming separated from marine stingers and wildlife.30 Cannonvale Beach has a stinger net for safe swimming in the summer months.9 For anyone who wants a swim without a boat, these are the beaches to know.

Further along the coast, Bowen is known for quiet beaches and shore snorkelling at Horseshoe Bay and Rose Bay when conditions suit.29 Airlie Beach is the main gateway for tours, ferries and sailing, so the mainland sand and the island sand can share a single trip.44 The warm months bring their own trade-off, since November to March is warmer and wetter, with tropical showers.45

Marine stingers may be present year-round, with higher risk from November to May, and the advice is to wear protective clothing when entering the ocean and to use patrolled or managed swimming areas where available.33 That makes the lagoon and the netted beaches the sensible choice in the warm months. On the islands, ask your operator about stinger suits, as inclusions differ between tours.

  • Remember there is no scheduled public ferry to Whitehaven19
  • Ask about stinger suits, as inclusions differ33
  • Check the tide timing with your operator34

On the sand4

  • Drinking water and food beyond the tour supply35
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, swimwear and a towel36
  • Comfortable shoes or sandals for the lookout36
  • A waterproof bag for your phone37

Choosing a beach by what you want to do

Snorkelling from the beach works at selected island beaches where fringing reef sits close to shore, and conditions change with weather and tide.46 If snorkelling matters more than sand, choose a day with a reef stop, such as the Chalkies pairing or a tour that names Hook Island.7 If photographs matter, choose the lookout and go at mid to low tide.47

Season matters. April to October generally brings milder temperatures and lower humidity, and November to March is warmer and wetter, with tropical showers.45 At the nearest weather station, Hamilton Island Airport, July has 50 mm of precipitation and February has 352 mm.48,48 The dry months suit a long beach day, and the wet months bring warmer water but more showers.

Whichever beach you choose, pack for a place with no shops. Bring reef-safe sun protection, drinking water and any food beyond what the tours supply.35 Comfortable shoes or sandals suit the lookout walk.36 A cruise from Airlie Beach with a Hill Inlet stop is listed at 8 hours from $167, and a sailing day with a Whitehaven stop at 10 hours from $182.
