There is no public ferry, so here is what there is

The first thing to know about how to get to Whitehaven Beach is what does not exist. Tourism Whitsundays states that there is no scheduled public ferry direct to Whitehaven Beach.1 The beach is reached by tour boat, high-speed vessel, yacht or scenic flight, with departures from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.1 Its visitor guide adds that commercial tours, sailing trips and private charters depart from Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour, while some scenic flights land on the beach.4

That makes the beach a booked trip and not a spontaneous one. Tourism Whitsundays says most visitors reach Whitehaven on a guided tour from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island or Hayman Island.5 Scheduled ferries do run between Port of Airlie and Daydream Island and Hamilton Island, so you can reach those islands on your own and join a tour from there.6

The ways below fall into groups: the small fast boat that our listing sells, the sailing catamaran, the cruises that run on a fixed timetable, the scenic flight and the overnight options. Each can be a good day, and each leaves you with a different amount of time on the sand. The comparison table and chart further down put them side by side by length and from price.

Getting to Airlie Beach first

Tours leave from Airlie Beach, so that is where to aim first. Tourism Whitsundays names two airports that serve the region daily, Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine.10 Brisbane offers the best range of connecting flights, according to the same page.11 Whitsunday Coast Airport is approximately 40 minutes from Airlie Beach, and buses and taxis meet every flight.12

If you land on Hamilton Island, Cruise Whitsundays operates ferries that carry passengers on to Airlie Beach and other island resorts.13 By road, Airlie Beach is approximately 20 minutes by car off the Bruce Highway at Proserpine, and national coach operators such as Greyhound Australia and Premier serve Airlie Beach from centres along the east coast.14,15 The Spirit of Queensland train links Proserpine with Cairns, Brisbane and places beyond.16

A transfer from the airport costs little compared with the day itself. The GetYourGuide listing for transfers to and from Whitsunday Coast Airport starts from $20, with a rating of 4.7 from 1,048 reviews. Our listing also offers a courtesy transfer from accommodation, so a rental car is not part of a boat day.

The small fast boat: our listing

The boat to Whitehaven Beach that the Viator listing on this site sells is a day by semi-rigid inflatable boat. The record says check-in is at the operator's office at Coral Sea Marina, with a courtesy transfer from accommodation as an alternative, and that a group holds up to 32. Tourism Whitsundays lists fast boat day tours as the most popular option and says that Ocean Rafting, the Red Cat Adventures Thundercat and Viper Whitsundays all leave from Coral Sea Marina and combine Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet lookout walk and a snorkel stop in a single day.22

The operator publishes versions of the day. The Northern Exposure tour departs at 8:45 AM and returns at about 3:30 PM, and the Southern Lights tour departs at 10 AM and returns at about 4:30 PM, from Airlie Beach.8,23 The ride out can take between 1 and 1.5 hours, depending on wind, tide, swell and weather.2 The Viator record does not say which version a booking gets, so ask when you reserve.

The price is a from price of $174, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and 5,022 ratings averaging 4.8. Ocean Rafting says its tours suit most ages from 6 months upwards, weather permitting, and are not suitable for guests with back, neck or hip injuries or who are pregnant.24,25 Check that against your own group before you book.

Sailing catamarans, cruises and the half-day trip

Slower boats trade speed for comfort and time on board. Tourism Whitsundays says Camira, the big purple catamaran, sails from Port of Airlie, and the adults-only Lady Enid from Coral Sea Marina.42 Cruise Whitsundays gives Camira a departure from Port of Airlie at 8:15 AM and a return at about 5:30 PM, and its snorkel stop lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour.17,43 The GetYourGuide listing for the Camira day runs 10 hours, starts from $182 and stops at Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout.

The half-day cruise is a different product. Cruise Whitsundays states that its half-day cruise gives up to 2 hours on the southern end of Whitehaven Beach and does not visit Hill Inlet or the Hill Inlet lookout, because Hill Inlet is reached by a separate entry point that needs an extra boat transfer.19,38,44 Its morning cruise leaves Port of Airlie at 7:15 AM and returns at 2:15 PM.18 The listing for a half-day cruise from Airlie starts from $87 and runs 7 hours.

More GetYourGuide listings reach the lookout on a longer day. The Whitehaven full-day eco-cruise with a buffet runs 8 hours from $175, and lists a stop at the Hill Inlet lookout, Whitehaven Beach and Hook Island. A Hill Inlet lookout and Whitehaven Beach cruise runs 8 hours from $167 with a lookout stop. A speedboat Whitehaven day pass runs 8 hours from $111 and its stops list the beach only.

By air, overnight and camping

The aerial view is its own category. Tourism Whitsundays says scenic flights by seaplane, helicopter and light aircraft are a popular way to see Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet from above, and that some flights land on the beach while others only fly over.3 The GetYourGuide scenic flight from Airlie Beach lasts 1 hour and starts from $249, with 1,639 reviews at 4.8. This page treats the flight as one option among several.

To get the beach outside tour hours, stay out overnight. Tourism Whitsundays says multi-day sailing trips anchor off Whitehaven or nearby bays, and that a bareboat charter lets you set your own schedule.21 The 2-day sailing tour listing from Airlie Beach starts from $311. There is no hotel or resort accommodation on Whitehaven Beach, though national park camping at the southern end needs a permit.45

For campers there is a transfer listing from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach that runs 2 hours from $70, though it has only 3 reviews so far. The camping area suits walk-in camping, with a hybrid toilet and picnic tables, and its sites sit in lowland vine forest and eucalyptus woodland behind the beach.46,47 Take everything you need, since the beach has no shops or cafes.39

How to get to the Hill Inlet lookout itself

Reaching the lookout is a matter of choosing the right landing. Tourism Whitsundays tells visitors to choose a tour that lands at Tongue Bay on the northern end of Whitsunday Island, from where the lookout track climbs Tongue Point.48 Not every Whitehaven trip does: the Cruise Whitsundays half-day cruise does not visit Hill Inlet.38 Check the stops in the listing before you book, and look for the words Hill Inlet Lookout in the itinerary.

Operators need the right paperwork. The Reef Authority says tourism operators must hold a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service commercial permit to access the Tongue Point lookout, and Hill Inlet is a protected setting with a maximum group size of 15 people.49,50 Recreational vessels of 20 metres or less can access and anchor in all the settings at Hill Inlet, Tongue Bay and Whitehaven.51

Once ashore, the walk is short. Tourism Whitsundays gives 1.3 or 1.4 km return, depending on the page, on a formed track with a short uphill climb.52,53,54 Our page on the lookout walk covers the track step by step, and our page on tides explains how low water can change the landing, so read both before you pick a date.
