The boat ride was great fun with music playing past gorgeous scenery, and once on the islands I could hardly believe how lovely it was. Lunch and guides were great.

Skipper and crew impressed us, the ride was a thrill, the hike up to the lookout turned out easy, and both the beach and the snorkelling were superb.

A friendly, professional and energetic crew, a lively boat ride and beautiful scenery around the Whitsundays, all very well organised from start to finish.

Our hosts looked after everyone, with kindness and humor. The lookout was beautiful beyond words, with turquoise water and bright sand below.

Whitehaven Beach is dreamy. We snorkelled among colourful fish and a turtle over a huge reef, and would recommend the day without hesitation.

A fantastic, well organised and fun day where everything was provided apart from a towel. The captain and deck hand were friendly, and the food was good.
the day in brief
The Viator listing on this site is a 7-hour day by semi-rigid inflatable boat from Airlie Beach, with a guided walk to the Hill Inlet lookout, time on Whitehaven Beach and snorkelling at fringing reefs. The itinerary lines give 60 minutes for the lookout walk and 120 minutes on the beach, and the group is capped at 32 people. A live guide speaks English and Chinese.
The Hill Inlet lookout in the Whitsundays sits at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach, where tides mix inlet water with the bay and draw swirling sand patterns that are best seen from above. Tours land at Tongue Bay, and the walk climbs Tongue Point to a viewing platform. That view is the reason many people book this day, and the beach and the reef make up the rest of it.
You check in at the operator's office at Coral Sea Marina, or take a courtesy transfer from your accommodation. The price starts from $174, and free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund. The pages of this guide go deeper on the walk, the tide, the boats and the swimming. Prices and ratings stay live on the booking panel below.

the walk
Tourism Whitsundays tells visitors to choose a tour that lands at Tongue Bay, and from the beach the lookout walk climbs Tongue Point on a formed track with a short uphill climb. Its pages give 1.4 km return in around 40 minutes in one place and 1.3 km return in another, so the exact distance depends on the page you read.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, which Ocean Rafting recommends for its Hill Inlet tours and the walk to the lookout. There are toilets at the lookout, and guests on that operator's tour may stay on the beach instead if they would rather not climb. Tourism Whitsundays calls them established walking tracks. That is a modest outing, and the view at the top is the one that every photograph of the inlet is taken from.
The Reef Authority manages the landing. Tongue Bay is a moderate use setting with a group limit of 40 people, and Hill Inlet is a protected setting with a limit of 15. Tourism operators need a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service permit to take guests to the lookout, which is part of why small boats and small groups suit this stretch of coast.

getting there
Tourism Whitsundays states that there is no scheduled public ferry direct to Whitehaven Beach, and that it is reached by tour boat, high-speed vessel, yacht or scenic flight. Fast boat day tours are the most popular option, and they leave from Coral Sea Marina. Every route therefore starts with a booking, and a flight is the one way to skip the water.
The boat trip from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven can take 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on wind, tide, swell and weather, according to the operator. For Northern Exposure, check-in at Airlie Beach opens at 7:45am. The listing adds that a buffet-style lunch is served on the beach and that the vessels are semi-rigid inflatables. Plan around those timings when you arrange the rest of your morning.
Getting to Airlie Beach is the first leg. Whitsunday Coast Airport is approximately 40 minutes from Airlie Beach, and Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island is the other airport for the region. Our page on getting to Whitehaven Beach compares every route by time and from price. Coaches from Greyhound Australia and Premier, and the Spirit of Queensland train, also reach the area.

the two versions
The operator publishes two versions of the day, and says the main difference is that Northern Exposure has more snorkelling time and Southern Lights offers more beach time. Northern Exposure departs at 08:45am and returns at about 3:30pm, with two Hook Island snorkel sites of 45 minutes to 1 hour each and time at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach at Hill Inlet.
Southern Lights departs at 10am and returns at about 4:30pm, with one snorkel site for an hour and two hours at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. It visits both ends of the beach and the Hill Inlet lookout. Departure times above are for Airlie Beach, and the operator lists other times for Daydream Island.
Pick Northern Exposure if the reef matters most and Southern Lights if you want to stretch out on the sand. Because the Viator record does not name the version, ask the operator which one your booking is before you travel, and check the check-in time that goes with it. The operator also lists other departure times for guests staying on Daydream Island.

the ratings
The listing has 5,022 ratings on Viator, averaging 4.8, and 4,575 of them are five-star. The rest split into 334 four-star, 60 three-star, 26 two-star and 27 one-star ratings. A sample this large, this close to the top score, says the operator delivers the day it describes far more often than not. That is a large record to lean on when you are choosing a day.
What it cannot tell you is which version of the day you will get or what the tide will do. The record describes two versions, Northern Exposure and Southern Lights, and does not say which a booking receives. The operator says its itinerary is a guideline that can change with tide, wind and weather. Ask which one when you book.
Read the newest reviews on the booking page with that in mind. Guests praise the crew, the boat ride, the lookout and the snorkelling, and a few mention windy days, crowds on the beach or pick-up times. A rating is a good guide to the operator, and it leaves open the questions of tide and weather that this site answers.

tide and light
Tourism Whitsundays, writing about Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach, says that the sand patterns change with tidal movement and weather, so each visit reveals different formations and colours. It adds that mid to low tide reveals more of the white silica sand through the water, and that early morning gives softer light, cooler walking and fewer people at the lookout.
Low water can also change the plan. Cruise Whitsundays says tidal restrictions at low tide can prevent its catamaran reaching Tongue Bay, the entry point to Hill Inlet. The Reef Authority marks the tender channel with tape that shows 0.5 m of water over the reef when the tide at Shute Harbour is 0.7 m.
Ocean Rafting says the lookout view is worth seeing at any tide, which is its own claim and a fair one for an operator that visits daily. Our page on tides and the swirl explains how to read the Shute Harbour predictions, and why a free cancellation window helps if the water looks wrong. A free cancellation window helps if the tide tables look unkind for your date.
Grab a spot, cancel for freeThe score in numbers
Of 5,022 ratings on Viator, 4,575 are five-star.
The rest split into 334 four-star, 60 three-star, 26 two-star and 27 one-star ratings, so the lower scores are a thin slice of a very large sample.
cost and cancelling
The listing starts from $174, and that is a from price, so the fare you pay depends on the date and the group. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund, which is a useful cushion on a day where the tide and weather decide so much. The price depends on date and group size, so the booking panel is the place for the exact figure.
For comparison, the Camira sailing day on GetYourGuide runs 10 hours from $182, and a half-day cruise from Airlie runs 7 hours from $87. The half-day cruise does not visit Hill Inlet or the lookout, according to its operator. The speedboat day pass on GetYourGuide runs 8 hours from $111, the lowest from price among the full days we compare.
Tour operators in the Marine Park pay an environmental management charge, which the Reef Authority calculates on a per person, per day or part-day rate. Check the booking page for what your price covers, and bring cash or a card for anything you want beyond it. We state prices only as from prices taken from the listings, never as quotes.

who it suits
Ocean Rafting says its tours suit most ages from 6 months upwards, weather permitting, and that they are not suitable for guests with pre-existing back, neck or hip injuries or who are pregnant. The ride is by semi-rigid inflatable boat, and guest reviews mention bumps, speed and windy days, so a smooth cruise is a different product.
The walk adds a short uphill climb on a formed track, and Tourism Whitsundays suggests asking the operator whether it suits young children. Guests who prefer not to climb may stay on the beach while the group visits the lookout. The track is formed, and Ocean Rafting recommends comfortable walking shoes for it.
Swimming ability matters for the snorkel stops. The operator asks guests who are not confident swimmers to say so at check-in and to tell the crew, who will assist them if they wish to snorkel. It lists masks, snorkels and fins as included. Anyone with health concerns should call the operator before booking.

swimming and stingers
The Reef Authority states that the Whitsundays is not included in the Queensland Shark Control Program and never has been. The Queensland Government advises not swimming at dawn or dusk, swimming in clear water and swimming or snorkelling with a buddy. That is a statement about an official program, not a guarantee about the water, so the usual care still applies.
Marine stingers are present all year in tropical Queensland, with higher risk from November to May, according to the Queensland Government. The operator says its snorkel kit includes flotation devices and a sunsuit or wetsuit, and recommends hiring a stinger suit during stinger season. Tourism Whitsundays also advises wearing a full-body Lycra stinger suit or other protective clothing when entering the ocean or reef.
If someone is stung, the official advice is to dial 000 and pour vinegar onto the sting, and Irukandji symptoms may take 20 to 40 minutes to develop. Our swimming page covers the stinger season, the suits and the first-aid steps. Do not touch stingers washed up on the sand, as the Queensland Government warns, since they can still sting.

season and weather
Tourism Whitsundays calls Whitehaven a year-round beach, with winter from June to August as the peak season of dry, clear days and mild temperatures. The Hamilton Island Airport station, 15.9 km away, averages 22.1 °C for the daily high in July and 30.3 °C in January. Tourism Whitsundays also says April to October generally brings milder temperatures and lower humidity.
Summer is warmer, wetter and quieter. The same station records 352 mm of rain in February against 31 mm in September. Tourism Whitsundays adds that September has the most settled skies and the lightest average winds of the year at Hamilton Island. Those are monthly averages, so a given week can differ.
Wet weather does not always cancel a day. Cruise Whitsundays says its catamaran runs rain or shine, and this operator describes its itinerary as a guideline that follows tide, wind and weather. A free cancellation window gives you room to move the date. Ocean Rafting also advises a jacket in the winter period for wind and for warmth after snorkelling.

A Hill Inlet lookout tour on the inflatable boat day suits you if you want the lookout, the beach and reef snorkelling in about 7 hours, with a group of up to 32 and a fast ride between stops. It suits guests who enjoy a bumpy, quick boat and are happy to climb a short hill. The operator lists toilets at Coral Sea Marina, at the lookout and at the southern end of the beach, so basic needs are covered.
Look at the Camira sailing day if you want a long, unhurried 10 hours under sail, and at the half-day cruise if you only want sand and a short day, knowing it skips Hill Inlet. A scenic flight, from $249 for 1 hour, shows the inlet from above. Each of those days has its own detail in this guide, so compare the stops before you pay.
Whichever you choose, read the stops list for the Hill Inlet lookout, ask what happens at low tide, and keep the cancellation window in mind. The guides on this site are there so that the choice is made with the facts in front of you. If you want the choice laid out as a table, the page on rafting or cruise puts the listings side by side.
